Praise and Worship: Essential for Followers of Jesus Christ

Praise and worship are essential functions contributing to the lifeblood (a vital or life-giving force) of a follower of Jesus Christ. Why? Because praise and worship creates an atmosphere where God’s presence can dwell.

When God created man, man was placed in an environment, the Garden of Eden, chosen by God. In that environment, man had access to the presence of God. When you look up the word “Eden”, it is translated to mean “delight” or “pleasure”. So God created man and put them in a place of His delight and/or pleasure.  When man sinned, they were removed from this ideal environment - removed from God’s presence. The Bible is an account of how God has sought to restore His relationship with man and to find a way to bring him back into a place of His presence.

Everything that God made was placed in an environment in which it would thrive and that includes man. Any living thing that ends up in a wrong environment is incapable of functioning optimally. That is why God sought to restore us to our right environment. His plan of redemption is intended to restore us to His presence. Since the time of man’s fall, God has set about to restore the relationship that man severed through sin.

This is why He sent His son, Jesus Christ, to die and shed His blood making that which had become unholy, holy again through His sacrificial death. And He gave us His Holy Spirit who is the key to the continuing work of Jesus in each of us. When the Spirit is alive in us, He restores the presence of God in our life and leads us into the holiness that was our birthright at creation.

Praise and worship specifically are God’s solutions to get us back into His presence. They are the means that provide the conditions that invite God to come to us as He did with Adam and Eve.

Psalm 22:3 AMPC

3 But You are holy, O You Who dwell in [the holy place where] the praises of Israel [are offered].

Psalm 95:2 AMPC

2 Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to Him with songs of praise!

Praise and worship set the stage for God’s arrival.
