POWER OF CONFESSION
Before we speak a word, we formulate our thoughts and they determine our words; and our words rule our lives. Words have power. Think for a moment about creation. God created this earth from His spoken word. Genesis 1 is filled with “And God said”, and ultimately it was. And while it is understood that you and I are not God, we are His creation, made in His image and likeness. So too, our words have power over our own lives - they have the power to destroy and the power to build up. [See Proverbs 18:21]
Death and life are literally, in the power of the tongue. When you study the original translation in Proverbs, it is referred to as the “power of your hand” because you are literally handing yourself death or life with the words you speak. If your words are kind, pure and edifying, they contribute in a positive manner to your health and life. If they are profane or negative, they bring forth death and destruction.
The word “confession” in the Bible generally means “to agree with” or “say the same thing that God says.” When you say what God says, you can change the circumstances of your life with His Word. You are not denying the circumstances; rather you are confessing what God says about the situation. And, since God cannot lie, His Word shall come to past. The power of confession is in its ability to free you. As Christians, our confession is the first step to bring about change. Without confession, we are never truly motivated to change.
According to the Bible, confession is multifaceted. The Bible speaks of confession for salvation (Romans 10:9-10) ; it speaks of confession of sin for the believer (Ps 32:1-6 & 1 John 1:9); it speaks of confessing Jesus Christ as Lord (Philippians 2:9-11); it speaks about confession of our faith (Hebrews 10:19-23); and it speaks about confessing to one another for healing/reconciliation (James 5:16).
As human beings made in God’s image, we have the unique ability above all other creation to choose our words and make confessions that can improve and enhance our lives. I encourage you to choose life today and walk in the power and freedom that God has made available to you.
