IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE
During this Christmas season, you’ll find a lot of Christmas classics on television. One of the most popular classics is “It’s A Wonderful Life”. It’s about a man named George Bailey who has so many problems, he is thinking about ending it all. Then Clarence, George’s guardian angel, shows up and let’s George see what life would have been like without him. He convinces George that his life definitely has purpose, just like ours. As followers of Jesus Christ, our purpose is found in Jesus.
The Bible points to a myriad of reasons that we should recognize what a wonderful life we have in Jesus Christ. The book of John in particular illustrates some of these reasons in vivid detail. Jesus declares the following about Himself:
“I AM THE BREAD OF LIFE. HE WHO COMES TO ME SHALL NEVER HUNGER” (JOHN 6:35).
The bread of life implies the fundamental role Jesus fulfills as He satisfies the yearning of the human spirit. He is the primary source of nourishment because He gives spiritual life leading to eternal life with Him.
“I AM THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD” (JOHN 8:12).
“Light” in the Bible is a symbol of God and His holiness. Jesus is "the Light," the only true and lasting Light…enough for the whole world. Those who come to Jesus Christ will never live darkness.
“I AM THE DOOR/GATE” (JOHN 10:9).
Jesus is gives an illustration of a shepherd and sheep in this scripture. He is the gateway to salvation as the Door. Only by coming to Him can one find the abundance of life, God’s provision, and the security of eternal life.
“I AM THE GOOD SHEPHERD. THE GOOD SHEPHERD GIVES HIS LIFE FOR THE SHEEP” (JOHN 10:11).
Jesus goes on to say that He is the Good Shepherd because He is willing to lay down His own life for the sheep, which we know He did. He is their leader, their protector; and knows best what they need. All the actions of the Good Shepherd toward the sheep are motivated by love.
“I AM THE RESURRECTION AND THE LIFE.”(JOHN 11:25)
In Jesus Christ, we are resurrected from our dead life and quickened to a new life. In fact, we never truly die. Jesus rose from the grave taking power and authority over death, hell, and the grave. We don’t need to fear death because the power to restore and give abundant life resides in Jesus Christ.
“I AM THE WAY, THE TRUTH, AND THE LIFE. NO ONE COMES TO THE FATHER EXCEPT THROUGH ME” (JOHN 14:6).
Jesus is the Way. Movement towards God is impossible without the work of Jesus Christ, our Mediator. There is no other way to have access to God, except through Jesus. He is the Truth. Personal truth reigns supreme in the minds of many people. But without a viable standard, there can be no truth – only subjective ideas, thoughts and opinions. The Bible warns us that there is a way that seems right to a man, but it leads to destruction.
“I AM THE TRUE VINE” (JOHN 15:1).
Jesus is the true vine with life-sustaining power. We are the branches that unless connected to the vine, will die. Through the Vine we are able to become fruitful.
These are among the multitude of reasons we, as followers of Jesus Christ, are living a wonderful life. If you focus on the trials of life, you will begin to wonder if your life has value. But you are here for a purpose! I pray that you will walk in that purpose and fulfill the destiny for which God has created you.
It truly is a wonderful life if you’re in Jesus Christ!
